Prof. Dr. Erik REIMHULT

University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) Vienna, Austria, EU

Position: Head of Department of Nanobiosciences, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria

Specialization: Colloidal systems, Nanoparticle synthesis and Colloidal assembly, Biosensors, Biointerfaces, and Biofilms.

At the NANOCON´23 conference Prof. Erik Reimhult will present the opening lecture “Polymer-functionalized nanoparticles and magnetically triggered release from vesicles” in Session C - Bionanotechnology, Nanomaterials in Medicine.

Personal Background and Education:
Prof. Dr. Erik Reimhult (1974, Uppsala, Sweden) obtained his M.Sc. and Diploma in Physics and Engineering Physics (in 1999) and his PhD (in 2004), studying biosensors and the self-assembly of supported lipid membranes, from Chalmers University of Technology, (Gothenburg, Sweden). The doctoral study was followed by a first postdoc at IMRE in Singapore (2004-2006) and a second postdoc at the ETH Zürich (2006-2008). From 2008 he was Senior scientist in the Laboratory for Surface Science and Technology at the ETH Zürich, supervising a group working on nanoparticles and surface functionalization by lipids and polymer brushes. Since 2010 he is a Professor of Nanobiotechnology at the BOKU Wien, heading the Institute of Biologically inspired materials.

Research interests:
Magnetic nanoparticles
; (bio)functionalization of nano- and microparticles; colloid assembly; nanoparticle-based smart materials; nanoscale polymer brush morphology and nanopores; nanocapsules (drug delivery vehicles); bacteria-interface interactions; early biofilm formation.

Erik Reimhult was the principal investigator of two ERC grants and coordinates an ETN:
